2011 Tour das Hugel

Pain is an unpleasant sensation often caused by intense or damaging stimuli such as stubbing a toe, burning a finger, putting iodine on a cut, and bumping the “funny bone.”[1]

It motivates withdrawal from damaging or potentially damaging situations, protection of a damaged body part while it heals, and avoidance of similar experiences in the future.[2] Most pain resolves promptly once the painful stimulus is removed and the body has healed, but sometimes pain persists despite removal of the stimulus and apparent healing of the body; and sometimes pain arises in the absence of any detectable stimulus, damage or disease.[3]

Pain is the most common reason for physician consultation in the United States.[4] It is a major symptom in many medical conditions, and can significantly interfere with a person’s quality of life and general functioning.[5] Psychological factors such as social support, hypnotic suggestion, excitement in sport or war and distraction can significantly modulate pain’s intensity or unpleasantness.[6][7]

Tour das Hugel

Tomorrow Morning. Pain. Satisfaction. Friendship. Three feelings. All different. All at once. All this…and more…Tomorrow Morning.

These last few days I’ve been attempting to write some romantic entry about what Tour das Hugel. About what it means to me and so many others. About what it does toto you as the day pedals away. There’s no way to truly express what this ride means to me. It’s the one day I truly feel PRO. To test myself the way they test themselves. For one day when I arrive at Zilker Park all I can see is the finish line on the Champs-Élysées. For one day my friends and I are the stars. The few that can conquer something so unique…so…so bold.  When we gather with our social circles that evening we’re the focus. The “Oh My God(s)” and the “I could never do that(s)” are the apex of the crescendo of every conversation. No, instead I’m simply going to list the facts about Tomorrow’s Adventure.

Where: Underneath Mopac Bridge on Stratford Drive.

Austin Cadence Presents: HILLS

For many people the month of November means Family, Friends, and Turkey. To a small group of people it also means Pain.Satisfaction.Friendship. There are no real words that can sum up my personal experience at Hugel. It was one of the most satisfying moments of my life. This Sunday we’ll embark on what was referred to as “The Second Loop.” We’ll be covering 70 or so miles with enough climbing to satisfy the likes of any Italian or Spanish climber. Come out to Progress on Sunday and learn to suffer; learn to push; learn to never give in. There’s no better way to spend your Sunday.

Tomorrow morning I’ll embark on a journey of physical pain. It’ll be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done physically. Why don’t you come join myself and others on this journey. We’ll have fun and if we’re lucky we’ll walk away with a t-shirt!! See you bright and early.
