Pedal People

Pedal People from Chad Treanor on Vimeo.

Cycling in Austin, Tx: No doubt every cyclist would have their own definition. There’s no doubt that there’s a portion of the population here at home that not only takes cycling seriously, but allows it to take over and they incorporate bikes into their every day decisions.

Above is a video put together by Chad Treanor. He sat down with some Local Folk to get their take on how they utilize their bikes and what they mean to them. From what they love most about riding a bike to what they would change about bike culture in Austin and the rest of the world.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’re sure to know at least one of the friendly faces in this video. Chad has done a great job of really getting the varied sides of the Austin cycling scene and through that forming a sense of community and comradery.

So make some coffee, make some toast and enjoy!

Memories…

The season may be over…but at least we’ve got a season’s worth of memories to motivate us through the winter. See y’all next season…or at the bar. :)

Tour de Fat

Anyone that has lived in Austin, Tx for any decent amount of time can tell you in 140 characters or less that our summers are HOTHOTHOT! From Facebook updates to twitter feeds the residents of Central Texas drone on and on about the the heat…and rightfully so.

However, as the calendar pages get torn away and Mr. October enters the kitchen so do the cooler temperatures. Windows are left open, hard miles are replaced with long social rides, increased caloric intake and ice cream for dessert.

One other special treat is the conclusion of the Tour de Fat. After months on the road the fine folks from New Belgium end their party on wheels in our fair city. With a Bike Parade, Live Music, Car for Bike Trade, Local Vendors/Organizations, Delicious Beer, and my personal fav…The Bike Pit/Rodeo..You’ll be sure that everyone is taken care of…from training wheels to recumbents!

To top it all of, Tour de Fat will donate a majority of the proceeds to the Yellow Bike Project, Austin Cycling Association and the Austin Ridge Riders.

Loose Legs Road Ride! from John Prolly on Vimeo.

But I just don’t get it anymore. Brakeless fixed gears are one thing…but then to attempt roads like Toro Canyon and The High Road I just don’t understand. To top it off…you run a red light on a frontage road. GET REAL….
To sum it all up….Austin.Cadence thinks that was stupid.

Austin.Cadence PSA: Learn to Lock It Up

“NO NO NO” Right now you must be asking yourself what am I complaining about. All that you can see is a bike that’s locked up downtown. What you probably don’t realize is that this bike is incorrectly locked! Welle bike racks are best used when bikes are parked at an angle. When parked at an angle there’s none of the tangle between pedals and spokes or the scratching of someone’s frame! Now of course there are certain situations where this is the only way to park due to a bike rack’s proximity to another bike(I’m talking to you Wheatsville).

Pay close attention to the picture below….take notes….and Learn to Lock It Up!!!

ACA’s Top 10 Reasons to Stop at a Stop Sign

Here’s a fun list of reasons to stop at stop signs the Austin Cycling Association came up with. We here at Austin.Cadence a BIG fans of stopping at stop signs. We especially like reason #10. :)

1.  It is the safest way to negotiate a stop sign controlled intersection.  Period.

2.  It is the law and you are breaking the law when you don’t stop.  A ticket for running a stop sign in Travis County can set you back $200.00.

3.  Want respect from people in cars? Respect the rules of the road.

4.  You’re a good rider.  You can spot potential dangers at an intersection without stopping, so you glance around and roll through.  This approach works every time until the time that it doesn’t.  Then, what is the cost?  A broken arm?  A broken neck?  Worse?  A quick stop for time to double-check is worth it.

5.  Future generations of cyclists are watching you.  Help parents who are teaching their child to ride safely around the block by setting a good example.

6.  Every time you maneuver your bike at slow speeds and every time you stop and start your bicycle, you deepen your relationship with your bike.  You know how the bike feels the moment before you need to put your foot down.  You know where to put your pedal for a smooth transition from stopped to moving.  Eventually, your body does all of these things so naturally that you can focus your attention on the conditions of the intersection.  That is safer for you and for everyone else on the road.

7.  Fitness. Once you’re safely rolling, take a few hard pedal strokes.  You’ll be surprised at how quickly you are back up to cruising speed.  That little burn in your legs is what getting stronger rider feels like.

8.  Clipping back in sounds cool, especially in a group.

9.  Get flipped off less.

10.  When not racing Mark Cavendish stops at stops signs.  It’s true.  I read that somewhere.

The bottom line is that your safety is your responsibility.  By being good road users, Austin cyclists can be part of establishing an ethos of safety.  Ultimately, isn’t that more fun for all of us?

2011 Ronde van Waller

March 22nd, 2011. Read back and you’ll find Austin.Cadence talking about our Race Series. About how we wanted to bring back the love affair with racing while doing away with the “Who’s sponsoring it?” or the “What can I win?”. We love the glory that comes with winning. Standing at the top of the podium knowing you were the best man that day.

Fastforward to June 11th, 2011. This date will mark the first race of the Austin.Cadence Race Series. Remember, no points, no prizes, no GC, just glory. Come to Republic Park @ 5pm with your steed and your best pair of legs. No $$$ required.

The Ronde van Waller is modeled after such Euro-Pro races as the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris Roubaix. Tough terrain, harsh conditions, and narrow roads will force a selection amongst the men that show up this day. Understand….this race will push you in ways others simply cannot. Calling this a race of attrition would be an understatement.

REMEMBER: Pain is Temporary…Glory is Forever.

Andrew Runciman Memorial Ride

Special Note from Austin.Cadence: Be on your best behavior this evening. Tonight means something.

Austin.Cadence Presents: AC Race Series

There was once a time years ago when racing was all about racing. It had nothing to do with how many sponsors there were or if it was sponsored by a “cool” shop. It had everything to do with pain…satisfaction…and glory.

We here at Austin.Cadence would like to bring back those days. Keep your eyes peeled for a number of races heading your way. No GC..no swanky prizes…just pure racing. Expect lots of pain, adrenaline and FUN. We’ll keep you kids posted!
